About Character & Line Counter
Character and line counts matter for database fields, code review, subtitle files, and platform limits. Alongside totals, this tool reports UTF-8 byte size and a per-line breakdown, which helps when a limit is measured in bytes rather than characters.
How to use
- Paste or type your text.
- Read the character, line, word, and byte totals.
- Open the per-line breakdown to find overly long lines.
Frequently asked questions
Why do bytes differ from characters?
UTF-8 encodes ASCII in one byte but uses two to four bytes for accented letters, emoji, and non-Latin scripts. A 10-character string containing emoji can occupy far more than 10 bytes.
How are empty lines counted?
Total lines counts every line break, including blank ones. Non-empty lines counts only lines containing at least one non-whitespace character.
